Hotels & Camping on San Juan Island

Friday Harbor

Two motels offer standard rooms. The largest is the Inn at Friday Harbor (360-378-4351 or 800-752-5752), on Spring Street. The motel has large rooms, indoor swimming pool, and whirlpool.

Island Lodge (360-378-22000 or 800-822-5753) is on Guard Street, 1/2 mile from the ferry landing, with standard and housekeeping units (including suites), sauna, whirlpool, barbecue area, and several llamas to entertain guests.

Island's West Inn (360-378-3031) is an all-suites motel with a restaurant.

Hillside House B and B (800-232-4730) is at 365 Carter Avenue (off Guard St.). This 4,000 square foot inn is in a quiet setting in an acre of pines, overlooking the harbor with Mt. Baker in view. It has seven guest rooms with private baths, and a full breakfast is served. Cathy and Dick Robinson are hosts.

San Juan Inn, a bed and breakfast (360-378-2070), is in the middle of town, close to the ferry landing on Spring Street. It's a charming Victorian building, furnished with brass and wicker.

Wharfside Bed and Breakfast (360-378-5661) is the Jacquelyn, a 60-foot ship docked at Friday Harbor, This unusual and well-equipped B and B has two cabins -- one with a private head. The forward cabin has a double bed and two bunks. The aft cabin has a queen bed. Breakfast is served in the main salon or on the poop deck if weather permits.

In the Country

Several fine bed and breakfast homes are located outside of Friday Harbor -- beside the sea, or in rural valleys.

Trumpeter Inn (360-378-3884) is just north of San Juan Valley Road, on Trumpeter Way. There are six rooms with private baths -- a find for romantics.

Olympic Lights (360-378-3186) is an outstanding island bed and breakfast, located on the sea near British Camp, with a great view of the Olympic Mountains. Four rooms share two baths and the fifth room has a private bath. Full breakfast is served. This Victorian farmhouse on Cattle Point Road is a perfect base for beach walking and exploring the parks on the west shore of the island.

Roche Harbor (360-378-2155)

The resort at Roche Harbor is one of the most intriguing vacation places on the Pacific Coast. It was a Hudson's Bay Company trading post, and then the headquarters for a limestone mining and shipping operation from the mid-1800s.

The historic hotel is a gem, and the resort's restaurant (next door) overlooks the harbor and serves local seafood. The chapel -- very popular for weddings -- is the only privately-owned consecrated Roman Catholic church in the U.S. A short walk takes you to the McMillan Mausoleum, the resting place for the family which owned the lime operation. For information and reservations, write Roche Harbor Resort, Roche Harbor WA 98250, or call the phone number (above).

Camping on San Juan Island

Public camping on the island is restricted to the County Park, but there are three private campgrounds. Lake Dale Campground (360-378-2350) is at Roche Harbor. Pedal Inn has camp sites at 1300 False Bay Road, in Friday Harbor. There is overnight RV parking with hookups, in the Town and Country Mobile Home Park (360-378-3049), at 595 Tucker Ave, in Friday Harbor. Lakedale Campground, (360-378-2350), on Roche Harbor Road, has RV and tent camping and several small lakes for boating and canoeing.

Hotels & Camping on Orcas Island

Rosario Resort (360) 376-2222 or 800-562-8820

This is the premier resort of the San Juans, centered around the Moran Mansion -- built by shipbuilding magnate Robert Moran. It is a holiday resort with a superb reputation. The mansion has a stepped dining room with good views and excellent cuisine. The music room, on the second floor, contains a pipe organ which is played daily. There's a spa with whirlpool and sauna on the lower level, and the resort features spa week packages.

The resort has 179 rooms and suites, ranging from quiet cottages to modern motel-type accommodations and condo-style suites. A large outdoor pool is for family swimming, and the resort includes a marina, with store and cafe.

Orcas Hotel (360) 376-4300

This popular inn is on a hill overlooking the island's ferry landing -- a restored Victorian with rooms decorated in period style. The hotel's English pub is a great stop for lunch or to sample the brews, and the dining room serves family meals.

The largest campground on the island is the facility at Cascade Lake in Moran State Park. The sites are suitable for tents, RVs and trailers, and the lake provides opportunities for water activity, including swimming, boating, and canoeing.

Hotels & Camping on Lopez Island

Islander Lopez (360) 468-2233

Located on Fisherman Bay, this is the longtime and only resort on the rural island. The operation includes a marina with space for at least 50 boats, plus offering sail and motorboat charters, and bike rentals. The resort has a swimming pool, hot tub, restaurant, lounge, and rooms (some with kitchens), plus several cabins.

Inn at Swifts Bay (360) 468-3636)

The Tudor-style bed and breakfast sits on three wooded acres, with a private beach a short walk from the building. The inn has four rooms -- two with private bath, and two sharing facilities. A whirlpool is found at the edge of the woods. Full breakfast is served.

McKay Harbor Inn (360) 468-2253)

This beachside inn is a 1920 home, with gardens in an unspoiled setting, and full breakfast served. The beach and open water are prime attractions.

Marean's Blue Fjord Cabins (360) 468-2749

For those who like rustic cabins for their vacations, try this spot on Jasper Cove. Three cedar log cabins are equipped with kitchens, decks, and fireplaces. Nature trails lead from the property; one trail running to the nearby beach.

Lopez Island Camping

Spencer Spit State Park offers a different view of the ocean from the northeast side of Lopez Island. With a mile-long sandy beach, the park offers walking trails, a covered picnic area, and nearly 50 campsites. The sites are perfect for bicycle campers, however they are quite primitive without the normal conveniences.

On Shaw Island

Shaw County Park is the only place to stay on this small, least-visited island in the San Juans. Located at the south end of the island, it has one of the best beaches in the archipelago, and this is one of the few places where the water gets warm enough for swimming. There are a dozen campsites, a boat ramp, toilets, and drinking water. Nature trails lead along the shoreline and through the woods.
