Great Vacation Drives

Travelwriter Fraser Bridges travels the nation's most scenic vacation routes, and reports on attractions along the way. You'll find drives to national and state parks, from Maine to Alaska and California, and from New Brunswick (Canada) to New Mexico -- through deserts and Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountain passes.

Places visited include Red River, a rustic ski and summer resort in the New Mexico Rockies, Independence and Lone Pine California, in the historic Owens Valley with the highest Sierra peaks looming overhead, and Estes Park Colorado, the starting point for the Trailridge Drive through Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park.

The Scenic Drives

Anza-Borrego Desert-San Diego to Borrego Springs (California) This drive over State Highway 79 takes you over coastal hills to Alpine and Julian, and farther east to Anza Borrego State Desert Park, and the community of Borrego Springs

Mt. Desert Island and Acadia National Park (Maine) This unique and historic national park features an excellent circle route around its island.

California's Highway 395 & the Owens Valley Mammoth Lakes, Bishop, Big Pine, Independence, Lone Pine. The route takes you from the Mojave Desert at Adelanto California, north through the Owens Valley (not far from Death Valley) and then climbing into the Sierra to Mammoth Lakes and Reno Nevada.

Arizona's Apache Trail Phoenix area, from Apache Junction to Globe & return. This is a scenic backroad route leading along lakes, and into the mountains of central Arizona.

New Mexico's Enchanted Circle The drive starts from Taos area in Northern New Mexico, and leads to Red River & return via Eagle nest Lake and Angel Fire. A longer drive describes the Valle Vidal circle route.

Colorado's Trailridge Drive Across Rocky Mountain National Park - from Estes Park to Granby, near Fort Collins and Denver

New Brunswick's Fundy Shore The Bay of Fundy, coast west from St John, to St. Stephen & Calais Maine

Utah's Flaming Gorge From Vernal Utah to Green River Wyoming

Alaska's George Parks Highway From Fairbanks to Anchorage, with access to Denali National Park

The Beartooth Highway From Red Lodge Montana to Yellowstone National Park - northeast gate and Cooke City
